MUET Exam: Evaluating English Proficiency in Malaysian Universities
The MUET exam, short for Malaysian University English Test, is an English language proficiency test organized by the Malaysian Examinations Council. The MUET diploma is recognized by Malaysian and Singaporean universities, as well as a few foreign institutions.
MUET is a mandatory requirement for admission to all public universities and colleges in Malaysia. Most Malaysian universities and institutes require local and international students to submit a certain standard of MUET exam scores for their application. MUET diploma is also accepted and recognized by some universities outside Malaysia, including the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, University of East London, University of Manchester, University of Gloucestershire, Robert Gordon University, University of Northern Iowa, Nagoya University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and United Nations International College.
Different courses in universities and colleges have different score requirements. In Malaysia, students generally need a minimum of MUET Band 3 to apply for public and private universities, while students in medical, law, TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), English linguistics, and English literature programs need at least Band 4.
MUET Exam Components:
1. Listening (30 minutes, 15% of total score): This section tests the ability to understand and identify key points in speeches, discussions, dialogues, or announcements through listening exercises.
2. Speaking (30 minutes, 15% of total score): This section consists of two tasks. Task 1 requires the candidate to present a personal statement within 2 minutes, and Task 2 involves a group discussion with three other candidates on a given topic.
